The new Nest complexes have officially opened on the UT campus
Veste Wonen, contractor Plegt-Vos and the University of Twente are celebrating the official opening of three new student housing complexes: Nest 1, Nest 2 and Nest 3. With the completion of these buildings, 117 modern studios have been added to the vibrant Boulevard at De Hems 4, 6 and 8 on campus. The Nest complexes were built with one clear goal: to connect students. Each floor features a shared kitchen and communal space, allowing residents to enjoy the privacy of their own studio while also having places to cook, study and relax together. During the festive opening, visitors were invited to explore the buildings and experience the community concept in practice.

From concept to completion
The project, now known as the Nest complexes, was initiated in collaboration with the University of Twente, the Student Union and the Central Residents’ Council (CBR). Students were involved from the outset, and their input played a crucial role in shaping the design. After a selection process, construction company Plegt-Vos was chosen to develop and build the concept. Construction began in July 2024, and the final complex was completed in June 2025. The Nest complexes not only respond to the growing demand for student housing, but also contribute to a strong and connected campus community.

Creating a warm Nest
The new studios in Nest are fully self-contained, each with its own kitchenette, shower and toilet. There are three accessible (MIVA) units in total, one in each building. All studios come with flooring and curtains, and residents are free to furnish them to their own taste. Each floor also includes a fully equipped kitchen and communal living area, designed according to the community concept to encourage interaction among students. Interior designer Ross Tucker created zones for studying, relaxing and socialising. The style is modern, warm and contemporary – a welcoming Nest for students. During the viewing afternoon, residents had the opportunity to explore their new homes. Feedback was positive. “What I really like about Nest is that I’ll have my own studio, but I’ll still be surrounded by people. The shared spaces are really cosy and inviting – the perfect balance between privacy and community,” said Olaf, a future Nest resident.

Connection as a guiding principle
Community-building has been a central theme throughout the project – from the initial plans and tender process to the interior design and future management. With Nest, Veste Wonen aims to support student well-being by encouraging social interaction and reducing loneliness. “With Nest, we’re not just creating housing, but a home for students – a place where they live, study and grow together,” says Annette Goossens, Manager of Student Housing. How the community develops will ultimately be shaped by the residents themselves. Veste Wonen supports initiatives that strengthen the community. To kick things off, a festive opening event with team-building activities is being organised for all residents. This approach is not new: together with housing corporation Domijn, Veste Wonen has already gained experience in building strong residential communities under the name Bundle. On 15 September, the new residents will move into Nest.

De nieuwe Nest-complexen zijn officieel geopend op de UT-campus
Veste Wonen, Plegt-Vos en de Universiteit Twente vieren de officiële opening van drie nieuwe studentencomplexen: Nest 1, Nest 2 én Nest 3. Met de oplevering komen er 117 moderne studio’s bij op de levendige Boulevard aan De Hems 4, 6 en 8 op de campus. De Nest-complexen zijn gebouwd met één duidelijk doel: studenten met elkaar verbinden. Op iedere verdieping is een gedeelde keuken en leefruimte. Zo hebben bewoners hun eigen studio, maar ook een plek om samen te koken, studeren en ontspannen. Tijdens de feestelijke opening van Nest konden bezoekers een kijkje nemen in de gebouwen en ervaren hoe het community-gevoel in de praktijk vorm krijgt.

Van idee tot oplevering
De aanvraag voor het project, inmiddels bekend als de Nest-complexen, is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met de Universiteit Twente, de Student Union en de Centrale Bewonersraad (CBR). Studenten hebben vanaf het begin meegedacht en hun ideeën waren bepalend voor het ontwerp. Na een selectieprocedure werd bouwbedrijf Plegt-Vos gekozen om het concept uit te werken en te bouwen. De bouw startte in juli 2024 en in juni 2025 is het laatste complex succesvol opgeleverd. De Nest-complexen geven niet alleen antwoord op de groeiende vraag naar studentenhuisvesting, maar dragen ook bij aan een sterke en verbonden campusgemeenschap.

De inrichting van een warm Nest
De nieuwe studio’s in Nest zijn volledig zelfstandig. Elke studio heeft een eigen keukenblok, douche en toilet. Er zijn in totaal drie MIVA-kamers, één per wooncomplex. Alle studio’s zijn gestoffeerd met vloer en gordijnen, de woning mogen de huurders zelf naar smaak inrichten. Op iedere verdieping is daarnaast een volledig ingerichte keuken en leefruimte. Deze zijn ingericht volgens het community-concept, zodat studenten elkaar kunnen ontmoeten. Projectinrichter Ross Tucker heeft zones gecreëerd voor studie, ontspanning en sociale interactie. De stijl is modern, sfeervol en eigentijds. Een warm Nest voor studenten. Tijdens de kijkmiddag hebben de bewoners de studio’s al kunnen bezichtigen. De reacties waren positief. "Wat ik zo fijn vind aan Nest is dat ik straks mijn eigen studio heb, maar straks toch altijd mensen om me heen. De gedeelde ruimtes zijn heel erg gezellig en nodigen echt uit om elkaar te ontmoeten. De perfecte balans tussen je eigen stek en samenzijn!" aldus Olaf, bewoner van Nest.

Verbinding als rode draad
Het creëren van een community loopt als rode draad door het project: van de eerste plannen en aanbesteding tot de inrichting en straks het beheer. Veste Wonen wil met Nest bijdragen aan het welzijn van studenten door ontmoeting te stimuleren en eenzaamheid tegen te gaan. "Met Nest creëren we niet alleen woonruimte, maar een thuis voor studenten waar ze samen wonen, studeren en leven. Een eigen plek, binnen een community.” aldus, Annette Goossens Manager Studentenhuisvesting. Hoe de community zich precies ontwikkelt, bepalen de bewoners straks zelf. Veste Wonen ondersteunt initiatieven die de community versterken. Als start organiseert Veste Wonen een feestelijke opening met teambuildingsactiviteit voor alle bewoners. De aanpak van Veste Wonen is niet nieuw: samen met woningcorporatie Domijn heeft Veste Wonen onder de naam Bundle al bewezen ervaring in het bouwen van een hechte woongemeenschap. Op 15 september nemen de bewoners hun intrek in Nest.
